Working with a naturopath

Seeing a naturopath for chronic fatigue in New Zealand: what to expect

By Megan — Naturopath & RN··6 min read

One of the most common things I hear in clinic — and over Zoom — is some version of: "I'm exhausted, but my bloods came back normal." If that's where you are, you're not imagining it, and you're not without options.

Why "normal" labs can still mean tired

Standard reference ranges flag disease, not function. A ferritin of 25 µg/L is technically in range, but most women feel noticeably better closer to 70–100. The same pattern shows up across iron studies, thyroid markers, vitamin D and B12. A naturopathic lens reads the same numbers against functional ranges and asks how the systems are talking to each other.

What a naturopathic consult covers

A first appointment is mostly listening. We map the whole picture — energy patterns through the day, sleep, digestion, cycle, stress load, nutrition, history. If you have recent labs, we go through them together. From there you receive a written plan that usually covers:

  • Foundational nutrition tailored to your energy patterns
  • Targeted herbs, supplements or cell salts where useful
  • Nervous system and sleep support
  • Lab markers worth retesting and conversations to have with your GP

In-person, Zoom or written plan?

All three work. In-person consults are lovely when you're local. Zoom is the same conversation without the commute — increasingly the default in NZ. A written Wellness Plan suits people who already have a sense of their patterns and want a clear, considered plan they can move at their own pace.

What it costs

In NZ, naturopathic consults typically range from $120 to $250 for a first appointment, with shorter follow-ups after. The Naturopath Check exists partly to make this kind of support more accessible — a written Rhythm Reset plan is NZ$129, with optional monthly check-ins.

When to also see your GP

Naturopathy works alongside medical care, not instead of it. If you're experiencing unexplained weight loss, fever, chest pain, severe or worsening symptoms, or sudden cognitive change, see your GP first. A good naturopath will tell you the same thing.

Fatigue that lingers usually has more than one driver. The good news is that once you can see the pattern, it becomes something you can work with — not just endure.
